Daisies Announce Spring, April Birthdays

The word daisy comes from an Anglo-Saxon translation which means "day's eye", and it was given this name because many species of daisies close up at night and reopen their flower heads in the morning. This is just one of the fascinating facts about this flower that appears simple but offers much more than meets the eye. This complex bloom has over 23,000 species, is related to the artichoke, and is actually many flowers in one - and because it is also the birth flower of April, we thought we would tell you a bit more about it. When purchasing bouquets for April birthdays, or simply celebrating spring - call Breen's Florist. We are committed to bringing all the beauty of springtime to Houston, one floral design at a time.  Read More about Daisies Announce Spring, April Birthdays »

Rescuing Mason – National Puppy Day

National Puppy Day is March 23rd and is a wonderful day to celebrate the very special bond between dogs and their owners. However, the main reason that Colleen Paige fought to have the day established was to encourage people to adopt and rescue puppies from shelters, as well as to educate them as to the horrors of the puppy mills. We thought this was a great opportunity to tell you about our shop designer's own personal story about rescuing her dog, Mason. Here is Carly's "puppy love" story, in her own words: Read More about Rescuing Mason – National Puppy Day »

St. Patrick’s Day Decor and Florals

Over 36 million people in the United States claim some Irish heritage, although tradition tells us that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day! The holiday originated as the observance of the feast day of the Catholic patron saint but has since grown to include many traditions and symbols of the Emerald Isle as well. Here in Houston, our parade is a city-wide tradition that celebrates all things green and has fun and whimsical floats and attractions. Another Houston tradition is Breen's Florist - and if you are looking for a way to decorate your home, or send a classic greeting to a Celtic friend, our floral designers have the ideas you need. Did You Know? St. Patrick was not actually Irish. He was born in Great Britain and came to Ireland as a missionary. He is widely credited with establishing Christianity in the country. It’s Time for Seasonal Spring Flowers

Spring is nearly here, and the best way to liven up your home or office space for the season is with a vase of freshly cut flowers or a blooming potted plant. They'll freshen up the air and brighten the atmosphere — just in time for spring! At Breen's Florist in Houston, our flower shop is bursting with new spring blooms, and we can't wait to share all of our new seasonal designs. Fun Facts about Flowers This year, the first day of spring is on March 19th. The flowers don't know that, but they can tell that the days are getting longer and the temperatures are rising. In the United States, we celebrate the first day of spring on the vernal equinox, the day when the Earth reaches the point in its orbit around the Sun when daylight and darkness are equal. After the vernal equinox, days in the Northern Hemisphere get increasingly longer, until the first day of summer. In other parts of the world, the first day of spring is based on the lunar phases, instead. The people of Japan take their cue from their national flowers. They don't officially recognize the beginning of spring until the cherry blossoms bloom. Read More about It’s Time for Seasonal Spring Flowers »

International Women’s Day, Local & Global

For over a century, International Women's Day has celebrated the social, cultural, political, and economic contributions and achievements of women. Recognized in 20 countries, the initiative has borne witness to a lot of victorious moments but has also confronted heartbreaking challenge and injustice. Looking ahead with bold confidence, the groups that make up the collective effort continue to work towards gender parity, social justice, equality for everyone. Those intimately involved with the movement are very aware that the responsibility for fighting for these rights doesn't fall on the shoulders of one entity - be it a non-profit, a corporation, a social action committee, or a government. Rather, true advancements are made when all band together with others around the globe. On March 8th, join the movement by posting your activities with the hashtag #BeBoldForChange. The Artistry of Floral Design

Floral Design Day is a day to celebrate the artistic flair and creativity of professional designers across the country. The day was originally established as a tribute to Carl Rittner, whose School of Floral Design was considered visionary and innovative, giving credence to the talent of florists everywhere and dispelling the myth that they simply "placed flowers in a vase". Applying the concepts of the visual arts - color, texture, space and line - the industry was elevated and recognized as an artistic discipline unto itself. For those who have dedicated their lives to making the world more beautiful - we celebrate you! Read More about The Artistry of Floral Design »

February Designated to Celebrate Weddings

When you think of the perfect month to celebrate weddings, what month comes to mind? According to the National Association of Bridal Consultants, National Wedding Month is February, a fact that may seem surprising to some. Across the country, winter is not the most popular time to host a wedding. Still, here at Breen's Florist, we do think there are many valid reasons that this month is a great one to celebrate the institution. Quick Trivia: There are approximately 2.4 million weddings annually - or an average of 6,200 ceremonies per day. That is a lot of wedding cake!
