International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th. Set aside as a day to honor women around the world, the holiday is over a century old and is observed in over 30 countries. Since 1977, when the United Nations recognized the day, there has been a theme named every year. Themes have ranged from awareness of violence towards women, to women combating poverty in rural countries. In 2016, the movement will get behind “Make it Happen!”, a reference to achieving parity for all women.
Unfortunately, in some regions women are still fighting for basic freedoms and even safety. For countries in the West, the day is meant to stand in solidarity with those women, and champion change. In the United States, we also celebrate the contributions of the women who have played key roles in making our country great. From Clara Barton, the founder of the Red Cross; to Serena Williams, tennis champion; from abolitionist Harriet Tubman to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt – women are woven into the very fabric of our history and legacy.

Every day, women across Houston and across the country continue to have significant impact on the lives of others. Whether influencing their own family or friends, making laws, curing disease or educating the next generation – women in this country enjoy a vast array of opportunity to make a difference. For the influential woman in your life, Breen’s has floral arrangements and bouquets that celebrate them – orchids represent refinement, alstromeria signify wealth and prosperity, and daffodils convey respect and esteem.
