Snapdragons for Springtime Celebration and Gift Giving

SnapdragonsThe beautiful snapdragon helps to usher in the spring season with unprecedented style and grace. With tall, slender, subtle green stalks that bloom delicate pastel-colored flowers all the way to the top, they are the ideal accent flower for just about any spring bouquet.

The History of Snapdragons

Snapdragons have a long, rich history. They were known to have been cultivated as far back as the Roman Empire. Early Greeks and Romans believed that snapdragons offered protection from spells, curses and other misfortune. They were also believed to contain an elixir of youth and vitality; some women would use snapdragon essence as a facial skin tonic.

Snapdragon origins have been traced to the Mediterranean as well as to southern Europe, but they are now found all around the world. They were even named flower of the year here in America by the U.S. National Garden Bureau in in 1994. Today, there are three types of snapdragons that tend to be grown and cultivated: dragon jaws, double azalea, and butterfly.

What’s in a Name?

Snapdragon’s name references the look of their blooms, which, despite their beauty, also resemble a dragon’s head. The size of the snapdragon stalk can range from just 6 inches to up to a stunning 4 feet tall. The flowers of the snapdragon were originally just white and/or purple in color, but today there are many colors available, from pastels to deep yellows, reds and oranges.

While snapdragons do look lovely on their own, they really shine as an accent flower in a spring or summer arrangement. For example, the Sweet Twilight bouquet is bursting with spring splendor, combining the signature lavender Twilight Rose with an assortment of white and very light pastel colored snapdragons. The effect is truly breathtaking.
