Floral Design Day is a day to celebrate the artistic flair and creativity of professional designers across the country. The day was originally established as a tribute to Carl Rittner, whose School of Floral Design was considered visionary and innovative, giving credence to the talent of florists everywhere and dispelling the myth that they simply “placed flowers in a vase”. Applying the concepts of the visual arts – color, texture, space and line – the industry was elevated and recognized as an artistic discipline unto itself. Throughout history, the arranging of flowers has reflected the cultural and societal values of the time. In the Romantic and Victorian Era, lavish and wild bouquets of mixed flowers were in vogue. At that time, flowers were used to convey secret messages, and each bloom carried a sentiment. Women used flowers not only for home decor, but as fashion accessories, actually carrying bouquets with them as they walked around town.

The Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements in the art world heavily influenced floral design, as the “unkempt, wild” look gave way to highly geometric designs. Today, this type of arranging is still exceptionally popular. Floral designers use sweeping and fluid curves, or dramatic, bold lines and sharp angles – all to create movement in space, and design dramatic aesthetics. Tropical flowers such as birds of paradise and ginger are often used in these designs, as are orchids and natural elements such as curly willow. The containers are also often used as a part of the design, whether curvaceous bowls or stark cubes.
