Breen’s Florist – Mother’s Day

mother's dayAlthough some suspect that Mother’s Day was invented by the greeting card companies, it has a historical back-story which involves the Civil War, a woman in West Virginia and President Woodrow Wilson! As we plan to honor our moms on May 8th, let’s take a look at some of the fun facts surrounding this most special of days.

mother's day

  • In Greek mythology, spring festivals were celebrated to honor Rhea, who was considered to be the mother of many other gods.
  •  Romans held a three-day festival named Hilaria, which was dedicated to the mother goddess Cybele. There were parades, games, and masquerades; as well as offerings made at her temple.
  • In the 1600’s, Mothering Sunday took place on the 4th Sunday of Lent in England, and was originally meant to “call people home to Mother Church”. It involved prayers and children giving their moms flowers.
  • Before, during and after the Civil War, women were actively involved in organizing for social issues. Ann Jarvis established “Mother’s Work Days” and “Mother’s Friendship Days” to unite mothers of soldiers for reconciliation, as well as to fight for community causes.

mother's dayAnna Jarvis (daughter of Ann) wanted to carry out her mother’s dream of having a national day just for moms. Her efforts were rewarded when in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Anna was known to give out carnations, her mother’s favorite flower, on that day. Giving flowers is still one of the most beloved traditions that we have.

mother's dayAbout 25% of all flowers purchased throughout the year are purchased on this day, and the carnation has remained as the unofficial ambassador of the holiday. Roses, orchids, and other vibrant spring blooms are also popular choices, as they bring life and happiness to anyone who receives them. This Mothers’ Day, start your tradition and send Mom a gorgeous floral bouquet from Breen’s Florist. It is a custom she will cherish and look forward to all year long.
