Every season has its own charms – and in the springtime, flowers are on display. From the blooms on the side of the road to gardens overflowing with color, flowers are one of the most visible ambassadors of this time of the year. As we head into the summer, it is time to throw open the windows and let the fresh air in – and fill your home with these popular late spring florals from Breen’s Florist.
Although there are many choices of floral varieties, these are two of our favorite ways to decorate with flowers – peonies and tropical arrangements. Continue reading

Many things have changed through the years, but many traditions have not only survived, but thrived! Going to prom is still an important rite of passage for teenagers, an event that is anticipated for months and remembered for many years. Wearable flowers have also endured as a beautiful custom that is as much a part of the experience as the gowns, tuxes, and limos. And although we do have some different options with boutonnieres and corsages, the tradition of wearing beautiful flowers as an accompaniment to formal attire is still as popular as it ever was. When you are planning to attend your Houston area prom, look no further than Breen’s Florist for the most striking and unique wearable flowers. Continue reading
May gives us the opportunity to appreciate teachers and recognize nurses. Why are these two professions so worthy of our accolades? Because both are committed to positively influencing the world – they invest time, concern, talent and love into everyone they come in contact with. This is why Breen’s Florist is proud to help you to honor these special people on their special days – May 9 is National Teachers Day, and May 6 is National Nurses Day.
Did You Know? There are approximately 3.1 million nurses and about the same number of teachers in the United States. But we think that none are quite so amazing as our local Houston area professionals!
“When you’re a nurse you know that every day you will touch a life – or a life will touch yours.” – Unknown
Nurses are angels with stethoscopes, caregivers with nerves of steel. They are a powerful combination of empathy and practicality, expertise and comfort. Anyone who has spent time in a hospital knows that it is the nurses who make the difference. This May 6, send a beautiful floral design to the nurse – or nurses – who touched your life. Although we sometimes only spend a few days or weeks together, the imprint on our hearts is permanent.
“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” -Henry Brooks Adams
Teachers are at once scientists and authors, mathematicians and counselors. They guide and mentor, encourage and inspire, and have almost unbelievable patience and commitment. If you wish to give credit to your favorite teacher past or present, share a photo or story to social media on March 9th, and don’t forget the hashtag #ThankATeacher. In this way, you’ll be joining with people all over the country looking to acknowledge the important work of our educators. Of course, they would also love a beautiful bouquet of flowers or a delicious basket of gourmet treats. After all, who doesn’t love to be recognized for the work they do? There are so many people in our lives every day who quietly work to make a difference. We are thrilled to have the chance to help you in honoring them today and every day. Breen’s Florist is your local hometown source for the very best appreciation gifts and flowers!
Behind every successful business are a few really organized support personnel – and in April, as we celebrate Administrative Professionals Week, you have the opportunity to give these superstars their due. Maybe you are thinking of the friendly receptionist who puts your clients at ease. Perhaps a personal assistant who never lets you miss a meeting comes to mind. In fact, there are likely many hard-working, unsung heroes in your organization. You couldn’t imagine running a business without them. So for all they do, Breen’s Florist has the floral designs and gifts you need to show your appreciation.
Did You Know? There are approximately 4 million administrative professionals in the United States. Only 5% of them are men. However, until women entered the workforce en masse in the 1950’s, secretaries were nearly always male. Continue reading
The word daisy comes from an Anglo-Saxon translation which means “day’s eye”, and it was given this name because many species of daisies close up at night and reopen their flower heads in the morning. This is just one of the fascinating facts about this flower that appears simple but offers much more than meets the eye. This complex bloom has over 23,000 species, is related to the artichoke, and is actually many flowers in one – and because it is also the birth flower of April, we thought we would tell you a bit more about it. When purchasing bouquets for April birthdays, or simply celebrating spring – call Breen’s Florist. We are committed to bringing all the beauty of springtime to Houston, one floral design at a time. National Puppy Day is March 23rd and is a wonderful day to celebrate the very special bond between dogs and their owners. However, the main reason that Colleen Paige fought to have the day established was to encourage people to adopt and rescue puppies from shelters, as well as to educate them as to the horrors of the puppy mills. We thought this was a great opportunity to tell you about our shop designer’s own personal story about rescuing her dog, Mason. Here is Carly’s “puppy love” story, in her own words: Continue reading
Over 36 million people in the United States claim some Irish heritage, although tradition tells us that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! The holiday originated as the observance of the feast day of the Catholic patron saint but has since grown to include many traditions and symbols of the Emerald Isle as well. Here in Houston, our parade is a city-wide tradition that celebrates all things green and has fun and whimsical floats and attractions. Another Houston tradition is Breen’s Florist – and if you are looking for a way to decorate your home, or send a classic greeting to a Celtic friend, our floral designers have the ideas you need.
Did You Know? St. Patrick was not actually Irish. He was born in Great Britain and came to Ireland as a missionary. He is widely credited with establishing Christianity in the country.
Thankfully, here in Houston, we don’t have the cold weather and snow to deal with all winter. Still, new seasons are always exciting, and with the warming trends of spring come the new colors of the vivid flowers characteristic of this time of year. As designers, we love the opportunity to work with all of the exquisite spring blooms, and to create the artistic floral designs that you have come to associate with Breen’s Florist. Whether a special occasion or “just because”, don’t miss your opportunity to enjoy these amazing flowers.
Spring Herald: One of the first flowers of spring is always the crocus, which announces the arrival of the season when it pokes its head through the dirt. In colder parts of the country, it often pushes its way through the snow cover. That’s one determined flower! Continue reading
For over a century, International Women’s Day has celebrated the social, cultural, political, and economic contributions and achievements of women. Recognized in 20 countries, the initiative has borne witness to a lot of victorious moments but has also confronted heartbreaking challenge and injustice. Looking ahead with bold confidence, the groups that make up the collective effort continue to work towards gender parity, social justice, equality for everyone. Those intimately involved with the movement are very aware that the responsibility for fighting for these rights doesn’t fall on the shoulders of one entity – be it a non-profit, a corporation, a social action committee, or a government. Rather, true advancements are made when all band together with others around the globe.
On March 8th, join the movement by posting your activities with the hashtag #BeBoldForChange.
