Birthstone Collection – Citrine (November)

Citrine, which comes from the French word “citron”, means lemon. While the Citrine birthstone is seen as a little darker than a lemon, its color is more of a honey color. This is why Breen’s Florist uses an array of yellow tones in our Citrine birthstone arrangement.

The yellow stardust roses we use in this arrangement are a true yellow while the alstromeria creates the honey coloring throughout the arrangement.

When looking at the healing properties of the Citrine stone, happiness, prosperity, and strength are all visible in our design. The brightness of the arrangement brings out the happiness; prosperity is seen within the roses as they were once considered the flower of luxury; and the accents like alstromeria are hearty and long lasting florals to empower the strength of the gemstone.

Besides being November’s birthstone, it is also the 13th anniversary gemstone. During the art deco period between the world wars, the Citrine was sought after and many were used in many of the large display pieces. Even Hollywood starlets like Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo wore citrines as a sign of society.

Nowadays, citrine is more common. In fact, it is so common that it is now a popular stone for budget-minded women. As shoppers are being drawn to what is “retro”, citrine is getting a resurgence of popularity.

At Breen’s Florist, we love that this stone goes hand in hand with the autumn season. It allows us to use copper-birch leaves as accents to bring the warmth of autumn to this month of birthdays. Don’t forget about new babies being born this month too. The citrine babies will be motivated, creative, and self-expressed. Let’s celebrate those qualities with our Citrine Birthstone arrangement.

The Citrine will only be available through November 30th. Order today for everyone you know who is having a birthday this month.

Tips For Sending Flowers To Someone Special Who Lives Far Away

Showing someone you care about just how much they mean to you can be difficult. This becomes even truer when the person you are trying to get your message to lives out of state. While flowers are always a great way to express your feelings, you probably want to ensure that you are picking the right flowers. Not only that, but you need to know that your delivery will show up on time and that is it delivered to the right place. In this post, we are going to let you in on the best-kept secrets when it comes to sending flowers to someone out of state.

Order in Advance

If you always want to make sure that your florist has enough time to make the arrangement you are going to send, you need to order it in advance. We would suggest that you place your order at least two days before you want your flowers to be delivered. This is especially true if you are ordering flowers for a holiday that is well-known as a flower-centric holiday. Most specifically, Mother’s day and Valentine’s day flowers should be ordered a week or two in advance just to be safe.

Find the Right Flower Shop

If you don’t have a flower shop in your area that you commonly place orders at, it’s time to find one that you can rely on. There are many things to consider when you are trying to find the best flower shop in Houston. However, the most important aspect of finding a florist is that you know they are reliable and able to provide beautiful work every single time. If you need to know more about which florist to trust in your area, we would suggest that you read reviews online and narrow down your choices.

Ask for Help if Needed

Not every person is a floral savant and therefore, we like it when people feel like they can trust us enough to ask for our opinion. Not only can you tell you what flowers we have in stock and how we can integrate them into a big beautiful arrangement for someone special. Additionally, if you want to make an adjustment to an existing floral arrangement that we already offer, we can do that for you as well.

Choose the Perfect Arrangement

When you are searching for the right arrangement to give to someone, there are many different factors you should take into consideration. For example, what is the person’s favorite color? Do you know their favorite flower? What time of year is it? And do they have any allergies?

If you want to pick out the right floral arrangement, just be sure to think more about the person who is going to receive them rather than what you would like.

Add Gifts if You Like

Additionally, if you really want to go all out, you can purchase additional gifts to arrive with your flowers. Whether you choose to send a simple stuffed animal or an elaborate gift basket, the extra thought will surely be noticed and appreciated by the recipient.

Check on Your Order

Be sure to check that the person you sent the floral arrangement to has received it if you don’t hear anything on the day they are supposed to be delivered. If you haven’t heard anything from the recipient by the night of the delivery day, you may want to call the flower shop just to double check on the status of your order.

Homecoming Mum Traditions

Football mums are big part of the social scene for high school students to welcome back the school year. Usually worn to school the Friday before the school’s homecoming football game, this Texas tradition gets bigger each year because as always, “Everything’s bigger in Texas.”

Florists find themselves swamped with custom orders, but at Breen’s Florist, we love this time of year. Mums were once designed with fresh large mum flowers, but today’s football mums are created with silk flowers, streamers, ribbons, bows, lights, plush, and trinkets that celebrate the arrival of Football season for high schoolers.

These large creations are typically worn by girls while the boys wear a mini version designed on a garter for the upper arm. Both styles show school spirit with the school’s colors and may showcase trinkets based on various sports and activities. Texas high school seniors might choose silver and white or gold and white based on their school. Each football mum is specifically designed to each student with their name and date’s name for the school dance.

For those students who want to be a little more unique, quite often our designers will create mums that step away from school colors to embrace neon colors, black and white, and even animal prints. Specialty items like boas, feathers, and noise makers may be incorporated based on the individual.

In Texas, the bigger the better. Many students will try to out-design their friends or even create a homecoming mum party where everyone gets together to share in the design activities. Breen’s Florist has a complete supply of ribbons, lights, and everything you need to create your masterpiece at home. We pride ourselves on being the Homecoming Headquarters for your community.

With four locations in Houston, Breen’s is available for design tips, supplies, or even a location to have a homecoming design party.

Flowers In Film :: Flowers on The Silver Screen

Welcome to our new monthly blog post discussing flowers in film. We hope you have as much fun with it as we will. Now, on with the show….

Dining room scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca.

It’s kind of funny how you never realize how many times you see flowers in a film and just not “see” them. I am new to the floral industry, and since I’ve started, I notice flowers everywhere. Flowers can be shown as part of the script or part of the scene itself.

Poppy fields in The Wizard Of Oz

Filmmakers have long shown flowers and floral arrangements in films. From the poppy fields of “The Wizard of Oz” to the now iconic “American Beauty” to movies that revolve around a florist like “I Hate Valentine’s Day”. The examples are endless.

Since I’ve started working in the floral industry, I’ve noticed more and more the actual flowers and arrangements throughout the history of movies. Did you know that during the mid-century, a good amount of arrangements were made with gladiolas, roses, and carnations? I didn’t either until I recently watched a lot of older movies that spanned the 30’s through the 60’s. The arrangements themselves were rather large too. I guess they really did say it with flowers!

Kim Novak starring in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo

Everywhere you look in movies and television, there are flowers around most scenes in one way, shape, or form. The next time you watch a film or a tv show, just look and see. Whether they are integral to the scene or just in the background, they’re there…sometimes lurking in the background, sometimes prominently featured. It’s pretty amazing just how much flowers play a part, just like actors.

Peridot – August Birthstone Collection

Save 10% when ordering Breen’s Florist “Peridot” arrangement. Enter coupon code: PERIDOT

For the month of August, Breen’s Florist is celebrating with our birthstone collection arrangement, “Peridot.” Our arrangement features green antheriums, bells of Ireland, green cymbidium orchids, and other flowers to help accent the green that represents the peridot gemstone.

While the peridot gemstone is an inexpensive stone, it represents something much more valuable than money. The ancient Egyptians believed that the peridot harnessed the power of nature and was the gem of the sun. It is said that the stone brings protection, peace, and happiness. The accents of white roses represent a peacefulness within the arrangement, while the fun of the lime green orchids and antheriums bring a smile to those who celebrate their birthday this month.

The peridot gemstone is one of the few stones that have only one color: olive-green. The intensity of green depends on the amount of iron that is contained within the stone itself. Other flowers that might also be used to create a beautiful arrangement would be green hydrangea and succulents.

Breen’s Florist’s White Orchid and Succulent arrangement features the olive green colors from the peridot stone.

Married couples can also appreciate the peridot gemstone as it represents the 16th year of marriage. Perfect gift ideas may include 16 Lemonade roses, which have beautiful lime-green blooms.

Breen’s Florist will have the exclusive “Peridot” arrangement available throughout the month of August and remember, you can save 10% on the arrangement by using coupon code: PERIDOT.

If the tropical feel of this design is not up your alley, feel free to call one of our sales team to discuss creating a beautiful design featuring some of the other perfect flowers for this birthstone.

Fashion Up Floral Wearables

Flowers and fashion have gone hand in hand since the beginning of time. Ladies with big bonnets of flowers to floral print patterns for dresses and blouses; flowers are a staple when it comes to fashion. During the 60’s, “Flower Power” was an iconic term used celebrate the use of flowers with fashion. No matter what Fashion Week runway you are watching, there will be inspiration coming from flowers.

Breen’s Florist may not be designing your next prom dress in floral patterns, but we are here to accent it with floral accessories.

One of the most popular trends was made popular in the 50’s and 60’s with the floral headbands has come back into style. Celebrities are accenting their red carpet looks with subtle floral accents like headbands. It means stop and look at my face and not just my dress.

Another interesting way to accent your dress without limiting your hand and arm movements is to bring your corsage down and wear it on your ankle. This new trend has been quite popular lately as girls have been wearing more bracelets but still want to show off flowers.

Even two guys from Portland, Oregon have gotten into Flowers & Fashion with an odd sort of trend that is actually catching on around the world. If women can put flowers in their hair, so can men. These two gents have captured a huge audience with their beard decorating.

As you can see, flowers play an important role in fashion and Breen’s Florist has you covered for all those needs. From headbands to ankle corsages to even decorating your boyfriend’s beard, let Breen’s Florist help you bring flowers into your fashion choices.

Spice Up Summer with New Blooming Plants Ideas

As we are in the prime of summer and everyone is out in their gardens playing with their plants; Breen’s Florist in Houston has created a collection of plants guaranteed to spice up summer.

Begonia Blooming PlantThe most popular plant this summer is the Begonia, which comes in bright colors like reds, oranges, and yellows. While our plants have been bred to do well indoors, you can acclimate them to be displayed on the patio or even planted outdoors in your own garden.

We have featured the begonia, as well as kalanchoes and mum plants, to be sold individually in a wicker basket, or in one of our two European gardens.

Our double basket features one of our summer plants side by side with a beautiful indoor plant such as a peace lily or Chinese evergreen. Or our triple euro which add another plant such as an ivy or pothos for a great harmony of colors and textures all in one basket.

Another cool item we have added is a new take on the classic dish garden. Previously our dish gardens were designed in an ornamental ceramic pot. Now we have modernized the look and have planted a variety of plants in a clear cylinder giving you the ability to see the natural beauty of the plants growing.

And don’t forget about our designer orchid plants. We have a couple of creative designs including our “Fairytale Orchids,” which features three beautiful Phalaenopsis plants in a rectangle ceramic cube. Its size and beauty is only surpassed by the beauty in our most famous fairytale stories.

No matter whether you want plants for your home or your garden; Breen’s Florist has a wide variety of beautiful plant designs. Send one to yourself and one to a friend. Plants are a great way to strengthen that friendship as you compare your green thumbs.

Introducing Our Birthstone Collection – July is RUBIES

Breen’s Florist has begun to take a new approach to birthdays by creating beautiful works of art based on the birthstones of the month. July’s birthstone is the Ruby and beautiful red flowers are used to create a “rubitastic” arrangement for those July babies.

Our deep red Explorer roses and the fun red gerbera daisies are the featured flowers in our “Rubies” arrangement. We have accented the arrangement with red alstromeria and a few mini carnations with a bracelet of eucalyptus for some exciting aroma.

This arrangement will only be available for delivery July 1st through July 31st and can be delivered throughout Houston and surrounding areas. It is the perfect way to celebrate those July birthdays.

Rubies, the birthstone of July, are considered the king of gems and represent love, health and wisdom. It was believed wearing a fine red Ruby bestowed good fortune on its owner. A Ruby is the most valuable gemstone and its value increases based on its color and quality. This goes hand in hand with the red rose which is also considered to be the king of flowers.

The July birthstone, Ruby and the red rose are a match made in heaven.

Patriotic Arrangements to Celebrate the Fourth

patriotic arrangements

The Fourth of July is almost here- and that means outdoor fun, barbecue, and fireworks! It also means good times with friends and family. Whether you are joining the fun or hosting your own Independence Day event, the collection of 4th of July patriotic arrangements at Breen’s Florist will brighten any party.

The festive bouquet shown above resembles the fireworks you’ve come to expect each Fourth of July, and is even named after the display! Fireworks showcases blue delphinium, red carnations, and white spider mums, which combine for a bright July 4th display.

Fun Fact: The Star-Spangled Banner, our beloved national anthem penned by Francis Scott Key, was originally written as a poem! Key observed the attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and wrote the poem that would later be put to music. It was chosen as our national anthem in 1931.

Our Party in the USA design, featured above, includes red roses, white star-shaped lilies and blue hydrangea. Together these blooms create an elegant design that will enhance any Independence Day celebration.

What to Do on The Fourth: Gather the family and head down to Buffalo Bayou for Houston’s main Independence Day event – Freedom Over Texas, sponsored by Citgo. You’ll find live music, family activities, and the best fireworks show in Houston.
